I just saw one last night.... and I wanted it. Talk me out of it Oppo. They're RWD, Hatchbacked, and with a small 4-cylinder, probably fuel efficient.
So what's the deal with these cars?

Oppo will very very rarely try and talk you out of getting a car, especially RWD hatches.

Aint got no 4 cylinder!! Celica Supra = V6
In any case, the MKII is totally awesome. You'd have to be crazy to not want one 24/7

They actually have inline 6-cylinder engines. The Celica has the 4, Supra gets 6.

On the positive side they're not 4-bangers. The normal Celicas had I4s, but the Supras had 2.8l I6s :) later cars had handling tuned by Lotus as well, although I'm not sure if that's jsut in the UK.

The deal? People don't want to give up clean ones, and if it's in bad shape, it's in baaaaaaaad shape.

Toyota didn't make a V6 until 1988. Even after 1988, they continued to use the Inline 6 in the Supra.

Don't get that. Get this.

they're getting rarer and rarer, so act now before they're non-existent or priced well outside reason (if they aren't already).

Its okay, i want one too.

Nah, don't bother. Not particularly nice looking, quite bulky looking actually. Those popup headlights are gonna cost you when they go. Wheels aren't very nice either - bit too chunky for me.
...
OK I'M LYING. That was a feeble attempt at trying to discourage you from buying one so that I could eventually have one in the future. Truthfully, I think it's pretty handsome - it's definitely aged well. Those sharp creases and plastic cladding were de rigueur then, nostalgic now. And those popups - cool as hell. And it's a Toyota. So it'll last for more years to come.

aren't those buzzin'-half-dozen's?

Those were dos. Not a single donut.

Doh! Stupid ubiquity of v style engines! I knew that. He'll I even knew it was a 5m in there. Just a brain fart.

So here's the deal: they're awesome! I've been thinking about getting a mark 3 Supra and doing a 1JZ swap.

I thought the Mk3 Supras were fatter?

Your right on that and it was not just UK, Lotus Engineering helped develop the Mk2 Supra. And Lotus as a result got access to the Toyota part-supply resulting in a reworked Eclat, the Excel. Hence the rims:

Now I didn't know that. It's even got Supra wheels :)
According to period reviews, the Eclat was a paragon of handling. Does that mean you can get an Eclat that actually works for over 60% of the time?
No way you can lose :)
![]() 03/15/2014 at 17:20 |

Well 60% of the 60% down-time of an Eclat it's the engine and that did Toyota not touch so I would not bet your life on it ;-) Both manual Transmission and differential were from Toyota so you're good there.
Toyota is the reason the Excel was over 1k Pound Sterling cheaper than the Eclat it followed.

Yeah, they are a bit, but I like the Mk3 more. The Mk2 weighs 3000lb and the Mk3 is 3389lb with a manual.
![]() 03/15/2014 at 21:39 |

I'm surprised the Mk2 weighs that much. In a perfect world, it would be like 2500lbs
![]() 03/15/2014 at 22:03 |

The 2nd gen celica was around 2300lbs and the 3rd gen was a little over 2500lbs. The celica was rwd up through the 3rd gen and those had the 4 bangers.

Besides the engine, what made the Supras heavier?
![]() 03/16/2014 at 02:48 |

Those roof spoilers always make my oppo-parts tingle something fierce. Unf.
![]() 03/16/2014 at 10:02 |

The Celica and Celica Supra, are actually two totally different cars. I'm not sure what determined the weight difference, but I'm thinking the Supra is just a bigger car overall.

Whoa whoa are those photoshopped wheels?
I've always wanted a Celica Supra, or an 1985 Supra with a 7MGTE swap (or a 1JZ if possible) swap. With those wheels on OP's picture.. or some RS Wantanabes..
Looks like I gotta plug in the XBox!
